The patent was applied for on April 28, 1910 and issued on January 17, 1911. This padlock was offered in the Simmons Hardware Co. catalogs of 1910 thru 1917. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 which leads me believe that this padlock was adopted as the commemorative for the Titanic instead of being made to commemorate the Titanic. I believe that the 1887 patent and the 1891 patent (#573) was made by the same company or the 1887 patent was subsequently assigned to the company who made the Worlds Fair souvenir lock. Further more I believe the 1887 patent was for the mechanism and the 1891 patent was for the design. You will notice that the key indents below the shoulder allow the key to be retained by the mechanism. You may use my split screen feature to do a side by side comparison.
